Rare deluxe limited edition of Roize's epic love poem. Folio, bound in full levant morocco elaborately gilt by Canape with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, watered silk doublures and endleaves, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, original wrappers bound in. Illustrated by Lucius Rossi with hand-colored tipped in plates printed on fine Japan. One of 10 numbered examples with an original watercolor signed by Rossi, this is number 1. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom marbled slipcase.
Italian genre painter Lucius Rossi trained at the Academy of San Luca in Rome and, in 1867, moved to Paris where he had success at the Salon and, for a time, worked exclusively for the leading Parisian dealer Adolphe Goupil. A skilled colourist, he is best remembered for his detailed, graceful, and elegant paintings of ladies of the French court.
