First edition of this collection by the Milwaukee poet Antler, gathering his visionary, Whitman-inspired verse. Octavo, original pictorial wrappers. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page to fellow poet Annie Dillard, "for Annie Dillard, In admiration of your work - Dappled leaf-shade, Antler." The recipient, author Annie Dillard, has published works of poetry, essays, prose, and literary criticism, as well as two novels and a memoir. Her 1974 work Pilgrim at Tinker Creek won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction and her books have been translated into at least ten languages. Last Words is a collection of poems by Antler, the pen name of the American poet born Brad Burdick, a leading voice of the ecological and Whitmanesque strain in contemporary American verse. The volume includes his famous long poem Factory, a searing meditation on industrial labor that Allen Ginsberg praised as a powerful epic by one of Whitman's poets and orators to come. A protege of Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and later named poet laureate of Milwaukee, Antler is celebrated for rapturous, wilderness-loving poetry in the tradition of Whitman and the Beats.
