March 1988 issue of Sports Illustrated signed by American basketball legend Larry Bird. Octavo, original wrappers with Larry Bird in his Celtics uniform on the front panel, illustrated with advertisements and color photographs. Boldly signed by Larry Bird in black felt tip on the front panel. This issue features an article on Bird by Frank Deford titled “A Player for the Ages.” In very good condition with damp staining to the top left of the magazine.
Larry Bird is an American basketball icon whose career with the Boston Celtics helped define the NBA’s 1980s ascendancy, combining elite shooting, playmaking, and competitive intelligence into a model of modern forward play. He led the Celtics to three NBA championships (1981, 1984, 1986) and was twice named Finals MVP, while also winning three consecutive league MVP awards (1984–86), a rare achievement that underscores his dominance within a golden era of the sport. Beyond his playing career, Bird remained influential as an NBA Coach of the Year (1998) and Executive of the Year (2012) with the Indiana Pacers, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame both individually and as part of the 1992 Olympic “Dream Team.” His philanthropic presence in Indiana is carried through the Larry J. and Dinah M. Bird Family Foundation, which supports regional and civic causes, and his legacy has been further institutionalized by the opening of the free public Larry Bird Museum in Terre Haute in 2024.
