The King James Bible; An Early Quarto Edition of the Authorized Version, London, 1619 to 1620
An early quarto edition of the King James Bible, the Authorized Version that would become the most influential book in the English language, printed in 1619 and 1620 by the King’s Printers Bonham Norton and John Bill. Quarto in eights (21.1 by 15.4 cm), in an eighteenth-century blue calf binding, the smooth spine ruled and lettered in gilt, gilt frames to the covers, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Retaining both the general and New Testament title-pages, each a letterpress title within a cordiform panel surrounded by woodcut portraits of the Apostles and symbols of the Old Testament prophets, the main text in black letter and printed in two columns with woodcut initials. Bound with John Speed’s Genealogies at the front and the Two Right Profitable and Fruitfull Concordances (Bonham Norton and John Bill, 1619) at the rear. Bound without quire G, supplied with nine leaves from a contemporary Geneva Bible with all text retained, the contents browned, closely trimmed at the top edge, the title-pages with expert restorations, and bearing various ownership inscriptions and a few marginal annotations. The King James Bible, or Authorized Version, first published in 1611, is the most celebrated and influential English translation ever made, the work of some fifty scholars appointed by King James I and a monument of English prose whose cadences shaped the language for four centuries. Early quarto editions such as this were printed for household and church use in the years immediately following the first folio, and were often issued together with John Speed’s genealogical tables of scripture and with concordances, as here. The main text is set in the traditional black letter, and the striking heart-shaped, or cordiform, title panels surrounded by the Apostles and the prophets are characteristic of the Bibles produced by the King’s Printers in this period.
