German-American author and philosopher Paul Carus became the first managing editor of the Open Court Publishing Company at the turn of the 20th century. Founded by his father-in-law in 1887, The Open Court was founded with the goals of providing a forum for the discussion of philosophy, science, and religion, and making philosophical classics widely available by making them affordable. A pioneer in the promotion of interfaith dialogue, Carus published 75 books and 1500 articles throughout his lifetime, mostly through Open Court. He was a key figure in the introduction of Buddhism to the West, sponsoring English translations of the works of Buddhist author D.T. Suzuki, and fostering a lifelong working friendship with Buddhist Master, Soyen Shaku.
