Allen wrote Just Tell Me What You Want in 1969, with the idea of turning it into a screenplay. After having trouble getting together a production, Allen sent it to Sidney Lumet, who agreed to direct the film. The screenplay, adapted by Allen, won her the David di Donatello Award for Best Screenplay of a Foreign Film. The film starred Ali MacGraw, Peter Weller and Alan King and, to date, marks MacGraw's last leading role in a film.
