Rare Standard Oil Trust Stock Certificate; signed by both John D. Rockefeller and Henry Morrison Flagler
Rare Standard Oil Trust stock certificate signed by both John D. Rockefeller and Henry Morrison Flagler. Partially printed document signed “J.D. Rockefeller” as President and “H.M. Flagler” as Secretary, numbered A1241 and dated the 9th of July, 1888, at the City of New York. A certificate for one hundred shares in Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Trust, issued to E.C. Benedict & Co. The recipient, Elias Cornelius Benedict (1834-1920), was a prominent New York banker and yachtsman and a close friend of President Grover Cleveland, who in 1893 underwent secret cancer surgery aboard Benedict’s yacht Oneida. Issued in lieu of certificate No. A934, with the receipt at the left edge signed by E.C. Benedict & Co. and H.C. Robinson. In very good condition, with folds and light creasing. The certificate measures 11.5 inches by 7.75 inches. Rare and desirable, signed by both Rockefeller and Flagler.
John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) was a business magnate and philanthropist whose Standard Oil empire made him the wealthiest man in the world. Henry Flagler (1830-1913) was a real estate and railroad entrepreneur who also co-founded Standard Oil, remembered for his efforts to make Florida the 'Newport of the South' by providing extensive rail access and grand hotels to lure wealthy vacationers. Jabez Abel Bostwick (1830-1892) was a founding partner of Standard Oil, serving as the company's first treasurer.
