Rare Autograph Quotation from the 20th President of the United States James A. Garfield; Signed by Him Three Days After His 1880 Election

Rare autograph quotation from the 20th President of the United States James A. Garfield, penned just three days after his victory in the 1880 election. One page, cardstock. Boldly written and signed by Garfield, the quotations reads in full, "After the great battle of arms comes the battle of History. J. A. Garfield. Mentor O. Nov. 5, 1880." The quote, taken from a speech given in 1876, highlights his commitment to civil rights in the years following Reconstruction. The full quote reads in part, "But such a result can be reached only be comprehending the whole meaning of the revolution through which we have passed and are still passing. I say still passing; for I remember that after the battle of arms comes the battle of history. The cause that triumphs in the field does not always triumph in history...." In fine condition. The piece measures 4 inches by 2.5 inches.

James A. Garfield was the 20th president of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881 until his death by assassination six and a half months later. He was the first sitting member of Congress to be elected to the presidency, and remains the only sitting House member to gain the White House. On July 2, 1881, Garfield was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington D.C. by Charles J. Guiteau, a disappointed and delusional office seeker.
