Envelope Signed by Jacqueline Kennedy; With a Mourning Acknowledgment Card Following the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy
Rare envelope signed by Jacqueline Kennedy, accompanied by the formal acknowledgment of sympathy card sent in her name following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The cream envelope is signed "Jacqueline Kennedy" in ink at the upper right corner and addressed in a secretarial hand to Mrs. Henry Rogers Poore of Washington, D.C. The enclosed card, bordered in black and bearing the Kennedy coat of arms, reads in full, "Mrs. Kennedy is deeply appreciative of your sympathy and grateful for your thoughtfulness." In very good condition with toning and soiling to the envelope. The envelope measures 5.75 inches by 3.5 inches, and the card measures approximately 5.25 inches by 3.25 inches.
In the weeks following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, the White House and Mrs. Kennedy received an unprecedented flood of condolences from around the world, said to number in the hundreds of thousands of letters and cards. In response, formal acknowledgment cards such as this were sent out in her name, bordered in black and bearing the Kennedy coat of arms. Jacqueline Kennedy served as First Lady from 1961 to 1963 and was among the most admired and photographed women of her era, celebrated for her restoration of the White House and for the dignity and composure with which she led the nation in mourning. She later married the shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and worked for many years as a book editor in New York.
