In very good condition. A scarce example of early Reform Judaica, especially in the original cloth.
Early American reformist rabbi Marcus Jastrow began collaborating with the leading rabbi in Baltimore, Benjamin Szold, in the late 19th century. Their first joint publication, Hegyon Lev published in 1875, contained the first abbreviated Haggadah in Hebrew ever printed in America as well as abbreviated standard daily prayers for women and children all accompanied by non-literal German translations. In his Haggadah, Jastrow reduced the Hebrew elements to a minimum, incorporating many revisions even to such essential texts as Ha Lahma Anya and the Four Questions. Upon the text's publication in English three years later, Jastrow explained, "this plain narrative is well adapted to suggest many a thought as to what duties are incumbent on the Israelites of our own days, and especially in countries like ours where the morn of religious liberty has already dawned and is shedding its roseate light over all inhabitants alike.
