It follows a company of soldiers from their embarkation in England to the slaughter of Mametz Wood on the Somme, weaving the vernacular of the trenches together with echoes of Welsh legend, Malory, and the liturgy in a manner that has been compared to the achievements of Joyce and Eliot. T.S. Eliot, who published it, considered it a work of genius, and it won the Hawthornden Prize. Jones went on to write the equally ambitious The Anathemata, and he is now regarded as one of the major British modernists.
