Rare early 18th century French edition of Garcilaso de la Vega’s celebrated history of Hernando de Soto’s expedition to Florida, one of the great narratives of the early European exploration of North America. Duodecimo, written in French, bound in full contemporary mottled calf, the spine richly gilt in six compartments within raised gilt bands with a red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Translated from the Spanish by Pierre Richelet. In very good condition. A very handsome antiquarian volume.
Histoire de la Conquête de la Floride is the French rendering of La Florida del Inca, the classic account of Hernando de Soto’s ill-fated expedition through the American Southeast between 1539 and 1543, in the course of which the Spanish became the first Europeans to penetrate deep into the interior and to cross the Mississippi River. Its author, Garcilaso de la Vega, called El Inca (1539-1616), was the son of a Spanish conquistador and an Inca noblewoman and the first great author of the Americas of mixed heritage; though he drew on the testimony of survivors rather than firsthand experience, his history remains one of the most vivid and important early narratives of the exploration of what would become the United States.
