First Edition of the author’s fourth book. Octavo, original half cloth. Light wear to the cloth extremities, else near fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket that shows light rubbing with the preriquisite three reviews to the back panel. A contemporary inscription. Warmly inscribed by the author “For Joe Z.”, in French and signed “Saul”. The recipient was obviously someone close to the author, as our experience tells us that Bellow usually reserved inscriptions for those whom he knew well and such inscriptions are uncommon. Named as one of the 100 greatest novels of the 20th century by Modern Library.
