First edition of Charlie Brown and the gang’s words on happiness, with 30 Peanuts cartoons by Schulz. Small octavo, original boards. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to actress Phyllis Diller and close friend of the author’s, “For Phyllis with admiration and every best wish- Charles M. Schulz ‘Happiness is living with old fang face.” Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. A very nice association.
Before Happiness is a Warm Puppy, Schulz had published only collected “Peanuts” strips; this is the first Peanuts book to appear in a format of original text and illustrations, on colored paper. The small volume enjoyed great success, spending 45 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list, reaching as high as the number two spot.
