First edition of Gardner’s classic retelling of Beowulf, as told from the perspective of the antagonist, Grendel. Octavo, original purple cloth, illustrated with 14 drawings by Emil Antonucci. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “To Mildred, Best Wishes – John Gardner.” Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Light toning to the extremities of the cloth with and ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Some sunning to the spine of the dust jacket.
The first and most terrifying monster in English literature tells his own side (the true side) of the Beowulf story in this revisionist novel by the author of The Wreckage of Agathon- a book William Gass has called "one of the finest of our contemporary fictions."
