Fred Haise was selected as an astronaut in 1966 as a member of NASA's fifth astronaut class and served as backup Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 8 and Apollo 11, before finally flying into space on Apollo 13. During the Apollo 13 mission, an oxygen tank exploded, causing critical damage to the spacecraft and forcing the crew to abort their planned lunar landing. Haise, along with fellow astronauts Jim Lovell and Jack Swigert, worked closely with mission control to troubleshoot the issues and safely return to Earth. After his NASA career, Haise worked in various capacities in the aerospace industry. His expertise and contributions to space exploration have earned him widespread recognition and respect within the space community.
