First edition of Wells’ uncompromising foray into theology. Octavo, original cloth with gilt titles and tooling to the spine. Signed by the author on the half-title page, “With the compliments of H.G. Wells.” In near fine condition.

Wells' singular and uncompromising foray into theology, God The Invisible King "was so different from what Wells normally wrote that most people did not know how to handle it." Wells revealed that his aim was to assert "as forcibly and exactly as possible the religious belief of the writer" which he distinguished from the Christian doctrine. The work led to a lunch meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury, and provoked a number of works controverting his statement of his beliefs.
