Autograph note signed by George H.W. Bush, the forty-first President of the United States, written to former New York City Mayor Ed Koch on the day of the 2000 Iowa Republican caucus. One page on Bush's personal stationery, headed in his hand "Iowa caucus day" and dated January 24, 2000, with the word "Nervous" added in his hand before his printed name at the head. The note reads in full, "Dear Ed, Just back from the Persian Gulf to find your column on the death penalty - now read with interest. You're a thoughtful guy. Are you 'thoughtful' enough to vote for my 'boy?' Warmest best wishes, Ed - George Bush." Written as his son George W. Bush contested the Iowa caucus on his way to the presidency, the note finds the former President playfully lobbying the famously independent Democratic mayor for his support, and adding "Nervous" to his own name as the returns loomed.
