Left to command the doomed defense of the Philippines after General MacArthur's departure, Wainwright held out on the Bataan Peninsula and the island fortress of Corregidor until, in May 1942, he was forced to surrender the largest body of American forces ever to capitulate. He then endured more than three years of brutal captivity as the highest-ranking American prisoner of the Japanese, emerging gaunt but unbroken to stand beside MacArthur at the Japanese surrender and to receive the Medal of Honor.
