First edition. 12mo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication, “Lady Pentland with kind remembrances from Jan Smuts Nov. 1934”. An excellent copy with some light foxing in a very good dust jacket with a small chip to the front and rear panel. Smuts was the prime minister of South Africa from 1919-1924 and 1939-1948, and was also instrumental in the founding of the League of Nations and wrote the preamble to the United Nations Charter. Smuts was the only person to sign the charters of both the League of Nations and the United Nations.
