Folk Tales of Liberia gathers the traditional stories of the Vai and other peoples of Liberia, retold by J. Luke Creel in collaboration with Bai Gai Kiahon of the Vai Tribe. Ranging from clever animal fables to tales of tricksters, princes, and spirits, the collection preserves a West African oral storytelling tradition for a wider audience. Illustrated with striking drawings by the Canadian artist Carol Hoorn Fraser, the book was long used to introduce readers to the rich folklore of Liberia, the West African republic founded in the nineteenth century by freed American slaves.
