First edition of the promotional press box set created to accompany Universal Pictures’ 2018 film First Man, the Ryan Gosling hit movie about the first lunar landing. Produced as an industry-only awards campaign box set, it was distributed primarily to Academy members, critics, and guild voters during the 2018–2019 awards season. The set comprises five illustrated volumes covering different aspects of the film’s production—including the mission narrative and adapted screenplay (The Mission), acting (The Players), cinematography and visual effects (The Vision), sound editing and original score (The Sound and Score), and production design and makeup (The Craft)—offering a behind-the-scenes look at how the movie about the Apollo 11 lunar landing was made. Quarto, five volumes, illustrated throughout. In fine condition. Housed in the original pictorial slipcase and still in the original plastic wrapper.
First Man (2018), starring Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong and Claire Foy as Janet Armstrong, tells the story of Neil Armstrong’s path to the Moon by focusing less on spectacle and more on the tension, danger, and emotional cost behind the achievement. The film follows Armstrong through failed missions, experimental aircraft, and the relentless grind of NASA training, showing spaceflight as noisy, cramped, and genuinely terrifying rather than glamorous. It earned the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects (2019) and the Golden Globe for Best Original Score from Justin Hurwitz.
