When Fidel Castro first took power in January 1959 after the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista, his leadership quickly marked a radical break with Cuba’s past. Initially celebrated by many Cubans as a nationalist liberator, Castro consolidated authority by purging Batista loyalists, dismantling old political institutions, and asserting revolutionary control. In the early years, he implemented sweeping land reforms, nationalized foreign-owned industries, and launched literacy campaigns that dramatically expanded education and healthcare access. At the same time, his government moved to silence political opposition, curtail press freedoms, and suppress independent unions, setting the foundation for one-party rule.
