The Heritage Press Edition of Ivan Turgenev's Fathers and Sons
The Heritage Press edition of this seminal Russian novel. Octavo, bound in three-quarters morocco by Morrell with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, frontispiece, title page vignette, illustrated with black and white wood engravings. In fine condition. Translated from the Russian by Constance Garnett. Illustrated by Fritz Eichenberg.
Fathers and Sons might be regarded as the first modern novel in Russian Literature. The novel introduces a dual character study, as seen with the gradual breakdown of Bazarov's and Arkady's nihilistic opposition to emotional display, especially in the case of Bazarov's love for Madame Odintsova. It is also the first Russian work to gain prominence in the Western world, eventually gaining the approval of well established novelists Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, and Henry James.
