Fatelessness, first published in Hungarian in 1975 as Sorstalanság, is the masterpiece of Imre Kertész and one of the essential works of Holocaust literature. Drawing on his own experience as a fifteen-year-old deported from Budapest to Auschwitz and then to Buchenwald, Kertész tells the story of the young György Köves in a flat, unsettling voice that registers the machinery of the camps as a series of almost reasonable steps, refusing the consolations of tragedy or heroism. Imre Kertész survived the camps, worked as a journalist and translator under Hungary's communist regime, and labored for years in obscurity before the book brought him international recognition. In 2002 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for writing that upholds the fragile experience of the individual against the barbaric arbitrariness of history.
