Bartlett's Familiar Quotations is the longest-lived and most widely distributed collection of quotations to date. First published in 1855, the first edition contained quotations by 169 authors, chiefly the great English poets, William Shakespeare, and the Bible. The eighteenth edition, which was published in 2012 was edited by Geoffrey O'Brien, the editor-in-chief of the Library of America.
