First edition of Eleanor Clark’s memoir of confronting the sudden loss of her sight. Octavo, publisher’s blue cloth with blue and gilt detailing. Association copy, inscribed by the author to Julia and Paul Child on the flyleaf, “For Julia and Paul with friendly greetings, Eleanor Sept. 1977." Clark and her husband, the poet and novelist Robert Penn Warren, were friends and neighbors of the Childs and frequent dinner guests at their home. Julia Child was a chef, author, and television personality. She is recognized for having brought French cuisine to the American public with her debut cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and her subsequent television programs, the most notable of which was The French Chef, which premiered in 1963. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. An excellent association copy.
Eyes, Etc.: A Memoir is Eleanor Clark’s account of the sudden failure of her central vision in her early sixties and of her determination to keep writing in spite of it, composed in the large, sprawling hand reproduced on the book’s dust jacket. Clark was one of the most admired American writers of her generation, the author of Rome and a Villa and of The Oysters of Locmariaquer, for which she won the National Book Award in 1965. She was married to the poet and novelist Robert Penn Warren, author of All the King’s Men and the first Poet Laureate of the United States, and together they formed one of the most distinguished literary couples in America.
