Euripides (c. 480–406 BCE) was one of the three great tragedians of classical Athens, renowned for his innovative approach to myth and his psychologically nuanced characters. In Medea, Euripides presents a radical portrait of a woman driven to vengeance that challenges contemporary notions of gender and justice, while Hippolytus dramatizes the destructive consequences of sexual repression and misunderstanding between mortals and gods. The Bacchae, one of Euripides’ final and most enigmatic plays, examines the conflict between reason and instinct through the figure of Dionysus and his devastating punishment of Thebes. Along with Aeschylus and Sophocles, he is one of the three ancient Greek tragedians for whom any plays have survived in full.
