First edition of Emily Beaufort's Egyptian Sepulchres and Syrian Shrines; Finely Bound
First edition of Emily Anne Beaufort's account of her travels throughout Egypt and Syria. Octavo, 2 volumes, bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and tooling to the spine, black morocco spine labels, folding chromolithographic frontispiece to volume I and five other chromolithogrpahic plates throughout. In near fine condition. An attractive example.
British illustrator, writer, and nurse Lady Strangford composed Egyptian Sepulchres and Syrian Shrines in 1861, following her 1858 journey throughout Syria, Lebanon, Asia Minor and Egypt. Featuring elaborate illustrations after sketches she made during the trip, the volume became so popular it was re-issued several times. It did, however, receive one highly critical review from British nobleman Percy Smythe, which ironically led to their meeting and eventual marriage.
