Sean Connery's casting as James Bond in the 1962 film adaptation of Dr. No marked the beginning of what would become one of the most consequential franchises in the history of cinema. His portrayal established the template against which every actor to take on the role since has been measured, in physicality, in reserve, and in the dry wit beneath a veneer of control. Dr. No was produced on a budget of approximately one million dollars, a sum studios at the time regarded as modest for the material, and it went on to gross nearly sixty million dollars worldwide, a return that startled United Artists and prompted the immediate production of further installments. In the years since, seven actors have taken on the role of 007 across twenty-seven films, which have collectively grossed over 7.8 billion dollars worldwide, making Bond one of the highest-grossing franchises in film history. Connery himself played the role five more times for Eon Productions, and his portrayal remains the benchmark against which the character's screen presence is measured. Much of that owes to the physical charisma and magnetism he brought to the role, qualities that made the character as much a figure of desire as of danger and shaped how leading men in the genre have carried themselves ever since. The convergence of Fleming's source material with Connery's performance did much to fix Bond in the public imagination, and copies signed by Connery connect the literary origin of the character to the film series that carried his name to a global audience.
