First Edition of To Catch a Thief, the Basis for the Hitchcock Film; Signed by David Dodge
First edition of the sophisticated jewel-thief caper that Alfred Hitchcock adapted into his classic 1955 film starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Octavo, original black cloth. Boldly signed by David Dodge on the second front free endpaper. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Irving Miller. An attractive signed example of the novel behind one of Hitchcock’s most glamorous films, only the second signed copy we have encountered.
To Catch a Thief, published by Random House in 1952, gave rise to one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most enduringly popular films. Set on the sun-drenched French Riviera, it follows John Robie, a retired jewel thief known as “the Cat,” who must unmask a copycat burglar in order to clear his own name. Hitchcock’s 1955 adaptation, filmed on location and starring Cary Grant as Robie opposite Grace Kelly, won the Academy Award for its cinematography and remains a touchstone of Hollywood glamour; it was during the production on the Riviera that Grace Kelly first encountered Prince Rainier of Monaco, whom she would later marry. Dodge, himself an inveterate traveler, drew on his years living and journeying abroad for the novel’s vivid Riviera setting.
