First Edition of Esther Baskin's Creatures of Darkness; From the library of Andy Warhol
First edition of this nocturnal bestiary. Octavo, original publisher's orange cloth, unpaginated with 26 leaves, illustrated with black and white drawings. From the library of artist Andy Warhol with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was an American artist and leading figure in the Pop Art movement, whose work revolutionized the relationship between art, consumer culture, and celebrity. Drawing on imagery from advertising, mass media, and everyday products—most famously his Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962) and Marilyn Diptych (1962)—Warhol blurred the boundaries between high art and commercial design, challenging traditional notions of originality and authorship. His innovative use of mechanical reproduction, particularly silkscreen printing, reflected both the aesthetics and anxieties of postwar American consumerism. Beyond visual art, Warhol extended his influence to film, publishing, and performance, cultivating an enigmatic public persona that embodied his fascination with fame and surface. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with light chipping and darkening to the spine. Illustrated by Leonard Baskin. Ownership inscription to the front free endpaper.
Esther Baskin’s Creatures of Darkness (1968) is a poetic and allegorical exploration of fear, imagination, and the human condition, brought to life through Baskin’s evocative prose and Howard Baskin’s haunting woodcut illustrations. The book presents a series of meditative reflections on the metaphorical “creatures” that inhabit the darker regions of the mind, blending mythic imagery with moral and psychological insight. Written in a lyrical yet restrained style, Baskin’s work transcends the boundaries of children’s literature, engaging with universal themes of uncertainty, courage, and the search for meaning.
