The Compendium Historiae Ecclesiasticae, first published by Veit Ludwig von Seckendorff in 1666, became a foundational text in Lutheran historiography, offering a comprehensive account of church history from a distinctly Protestant perspective. During the 18th century, the work gained renewed scholarly attention as figures such as Johann Artopoeus and Johann Heinrich Boeckler contributed additions and editorial commentary, expanding its scope and adapting it to the intellectual climate of their time. These enhanced versions served not only to preserve Seckendorff’s original arguments but also to engage with contemporary theological debates and historical methodologies. Widely used in Protestant academic institutions, the Compendium functioned both as a historical reference and as a pedagogical tool in the training of clergy and scholars. Its continued use and augmentation underscore its lasting influence on the study of ecclesiastical history within the Lutheran tradition.
