Rare autograph letter and original photograph inscribed by Clementine Churchill to the Churchill family governess, Mary Dorgan
Rare autograph note and original photograph signed by the wife of Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill, Clementine to their governess, Mary Dorgan. The photograph of Clementine is inscribed on the mount, 'To Mrs. Dorgan with thanks for your help and good wishes Clementine Churchill 1950." The letter, on 28 Hyde Park Gate letterhead reads, '5th October, 1948. My dear Mrs. Dorgan, I am so very sorry that because of your health you have been obliged to give up coming to us. I want you to know how much I appreciate all you have done for us during the past nine years and to send you many thanks together with this gift. I hope that with rest and care your strength will come back to you. I would much like to see you one day, so you if you are calling upon Mrs. Landmere please come and see me. Yours truly, "Clementine Churchill"'. In near fine condition. Rare with exceptional provenance.
Winston S. Churchill and Clementine Hozier met at a dinner party in 1908 and after only a few months of correspondence, Winston wrote to Clementine’s mother, Lady Blanche Hozier, requesting consent for their marriage. On September 12th 1908, the two were wed at St. Margaret’s, Westminster, he more than a decade older than she and already a seasoned Parliamentarian. The Churchills had five children: Diana, Randolph, Sarah, Marigold, and Mary and their marriage was close and affectionate despite the stresses of public life throughout Churchill’s political career.
