Clarence Thomas (b. 1948) is an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, appointed in 1991 by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Justice Thurgood Marshall. Known for his originalist and textualist judicial philosophy, Thomas has consistently emphasized the primacy of the Constitution’s original meaning and the limits of federal power. His jurisprudence often reflects skepticism toward expansive interpretations of the Commerce Clause and strong advocacy for the protection of individual rights as grounded in the Second Amendment and the principle of religious liberty.
