Cinderella Liberty (1973) is Darryl Ponicsan’s tender and gritty novel of a Navy sailor stranded on liberty in Seattle who falls in love with a down-on-her-luck young woman and takes responsibility for her son. Ponicsan, a former sailor and teacher, adapted the novel himself for the screen, and the 1973 film directed by Mark Rydell and starring James Caan and Marsha Mason earned Mason an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, together with an Oscar nomination for its song. Ponicsan is best known for his military fiction, above all The Last Detail, filmed in 1973 with Jack Nicholson, and its sequel Last Flag Flying, filmed by Richard Linklater in 2017.
