Rare Apollo 12 NASA Photograph; Signed by Apollo 12 Crew Members Charles Conrad, Richard Gordon, Alan Bean, and Twenty-Four Members of the Mission Support Team
Vintage NASA photograph from the Apollo 12 mission, the second crewed lunar landing, showing lunar module pilot Alan Bean carrying the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) across the surface of the Moon. Boldly signed and inscribed along the mat by three Apollo 12 crew members to Elton “Steph” Stepherson, Jr., one of the earliest African American employees of NASA: commander Charles “Pete” Conrad, Jr. (1930-1999), “Good show - Let’s do it a third time. Many thanks - Pete, Charles Conrad Jr.”; command module pilot Richard F. Gordon, Jr. (1929-2017), “To Steph - A great effort - see you in Paree! Dick”; and lunar module pilot Alan L. Bean (1932-2018), “To Steph - You did one hell of a good job for all of us, many many thanks, Alan L. Bean.” The piece is additionally signed and inscribed by twenty-four members of the mission’s supporting cast. From the collection of Elton “Steph” Stepherson, Jr. Matted. In fine condition. The piece measures 20 inches by 16 inches. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Zarelli Space Authentication. An extraordinary piece of space history.
Apollo 12 was the second crewed mission to land on the Moon, launching from Cape Kennedy on November 14, 1969, just four months after Apollo 11. The command and service module Yankee Clipper entered lunar orbit on November 18, and the following day the lunar module Intrepid touched down in the Ocean of Storms, a short distance from the unmanned Surveyor 3 probe that had landed there in 1967. Commander Charles “Pete” Conrad and lunar module pilot Alan Bean descended to the surface, becoming the third and fourth men to walk on the Moon, while command module pilot Richard Gordon remained in lunar orbit. Over two moonwalks, Conrad and Bean collected rock samples, deployed the ALSEP scientific instruments, and retrieved parts from Surveyor 3 for analysis, before a successful splashdown in the Pacific Ocean on November 24, 1969.
