Larry McMurtry (1936–2021) was a prolific American novelist, essayist, and screenwriter whose work bridged the realms of literature, popular culture, and film. Best known for his Pulitzer Prize–winning novel Lonesome Dove (1985), McMurtry redefined the Western genre by imbuing it with psychological depth and historical nuance, challenging romanticized depictions of frontier life. Beyond fiction, he was an accomplished memoirist and a passionate bookseller, operating one of the largest used bookstores in the United States and reflecting deeply on the cultural life of books. His extensive contributions to Hollywood, including the Academy Award–winning screenplay for Brokeback Mountain (2005), further extended his influence, demonstrating his versatility as a storyteller across media.
