“Idol of Millions”: Rare Boston Daily Record Newspaper Announcing the Death of Babe Ruth
Rare 1948 issue of the Boston Daily Record newspaper reporting the death of the baseball legend Babe Ruth, with the bold front-page headline “Babe Ruth Dead.” The August 17, 1948 issue, Volume 271, Number 41, thirty-two pages, originally priced at five cents. Ruth died of cancer on the evening of August 16, 1948 at Memorial Hospital in New York at the age of fifty-three. This morning edition gives the news the entire front page, his portrait flanked by the dates “1895 - Babe Ruth - 1948” above the subheadings “Idol of Millions Sinks Rapidly After Relapse” and “Falls Into Last Sleep In Prayer.” The page directs readers to the full story, pictures, and center spread within, and announces a life of Babe Ruth written by Bob Considine, author of The Babe Ruth Story. In very good condition with overall toning to the newsprint and light wear and chipping to the extremities.
George Herman ‘Babe’ Ruth (1895-1948) was the most celebrated baseball player in American history and one of the greatest sports figures of the twentieth century. Beginning his career as a star left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, he was sold to the New York Yankees in 1920 and transformed the game as a slugging outfielder, setting a single-season home run record of sixty in 1927 and a career total of 714 that stood for nearly forty years. Nicknamed the ‘Sultan of Swat,’ he led the Yankees to seven pennants and four World Series titles and became the first true national sports celebrity, his larger-than-life personality making him an idol to millions. Ruth died of cancer at Memorial Hospital in New York on August 16, 1948, and his body lay in state at Yankee Stadium, where tens of thousands filed past to pay their respects.
