The Apollo missions (1961–1972) were a series of United States human spaceflight programs conducted by NASA with the objective of landing astronauts on the Moon and returning them safely to Earth. Initiated during the Cold War space race following President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 commitment to achieve a lunar landing before the end of the decade, the program developed advanced spacecraft, including the Saturn V rocket, the Command Module, and the Lunar Module. The program achieved its most significant milestone with Apollo 11 in July 1969, when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the lunar surface. Subsequent missions conducted scientific experiments, collected lunar samples, and expanded understanding of the Moon’s geology. The Apollo program concluded with Apollo 17 in 1972, leaving a lasting legacy in space exploration, technological innovation, and international scientific cooperation.
