First edition of an early novel by Alexandre Dumas. Octavo, two volumes, written in French, bound in contemporary half calf over mottled boards with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within gilt bands, marbled endpapers. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page of the first volume, "a Madame Flanhaut. Hommage respectueux de l'auteur, A. Dumas." In very good condition, embossed stamp of the Gubbay Collection to each volume.

Antonine (1849) is an early novel by Alexandre Dumas fils, published two years before the work that would make him famous, La Dame aux Camelias. Alexandre Dumas fils was the son of the great Alexandre Dumas, author of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, and he stepped out of his father's enormous shadow to become one of the most successful French dramatists of the nineteenth century. His novel La Dame aux Camelias, drawn from his own affair with the courtesan Marie Duplessis, and the play he adapted from it became a sensation across Europe and furnished the story for Verdi's opera La Traviata. A moralist preoccupied with the position of women, with marriage, and with the fallen woman in society, Dumas fils was elected to the Academie Francaise in 1874.
