First British edition of this Edwardian era novel. Octavo, original publisher's red cloth with titles stamped in gilt, along with "Vita sine litteris mors est” written in golden gilt on the front. Priest’s most famous works include The Inverted World (1974), the interconnected “Dream Archipelago” series, and The Prestige (1995), which was adapted into the 2006 Academy Award nominee film of the same name by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, and Michael Caine. In very good condition.
Ann Veronica (1909) by H. G. Wells is a social novel that examines the constraints placed upon women in Edwardian England through the story of a young woman seeking intellectual, personal, and sexual autonomy. The narrative traces Ann Veronica Stanley’s departure from her conventional middle-class upbringing as she pursues higher education, political engagement, and an unconventional romantic life. Engaging with contemporary debates surrounding women’s suffrage, marriage reform, and social morality, Wells presents a critique of patriarchal authority and generational conflict. The novel’s candid treatment of female independence and desire generated controversy upon publication, situating it within the broader context of early twentieth-century feminist discourse and social reform literature.
