Engraved Portrait of President Andrew Johnson; Boldly Signed with an Extraordinarily Large Autograph
A large engraved portrait of Andrew Johnson, the seventeenth President of the United States, boldly signed by him with an exceptionally large and flourished autograph. The bust portrait, engraved from an 1864 photograph by A.S. Morse, shows Johnson in three-quarter view. Boldly signed by him in a commanding hand in the blank space just below the image, “Andrew Johnson.” Triple matted and framed. In near fine condition with light toning. The entire piece measures 16.75 inches by 21 inches. A striking presidential autograph, joining Lincoln’s embattled successor to a distinguished engraved likeness.
Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) rose from poverty and illiteracy to become the seventeenth President of the United States, succeeding to the office upon the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in April 1865. A Tennessee Democrat and the only Southern senator to remain loyal to the Union when his state seceded, he presided over the turbulent early years of Reconstruction, clashing bitterly with the Radical Republicans in Congress over the terms on which the defeated South would be restored to the Union. In 1868 he became the first American president to be impeached, and he was acquitted in the Senate by a single vote. He remains one of the most controversial figures ever to hold the office.
