The Amoenitates Academicae (“Academic Delights”) is a celebrated multi-volume collection of scientific dissertations written by Linnaeus’s students at Uppsala University, under his supervision and presidency, between 1743 and 1776. These dissertations—covering subjects in botany, medicine, zoology, and natural philosophy—were originally printed individually for academic defense, then later compiled and edited into volumes. This particular volume, Vol. VIII (1785), was published posthumously, edited by the German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber (1739–1810), who was one of Linnaeus’s pupils and a prominent botanist in his own right.
