First edition of H.M. Tomlinson's powerful novel of the Great War, a searching and elegiac account of the generation swept up and consumed by the First World War. Octavo, original cream linen cloth with a gilt device to the front cover, with a portrait frontispiece from a drawing by Percy Smith. One of only 1025 numbered copies, this is number 969. Boldly signed by H.M. Tomlinson on the limitations page. In very good condition.
All Our Yesterdays is H.M. Tomlinson's major novel of the First World War, following its characters from the placid certainties of the Edwardian age into the catastrophe of the trenches. Published in 1930 amid the great wave of war literature that included All Quiet on the Western Front and Goodbye to All That, it stands as one of the most eloquent English reckonings with the war. Henry Major Tomlinson was an English journalist, essayist, and novelist, celebrated above all for his travel writing, in particular The Sea and the Jungle, his classic account of a voyage up the Amazon, and he brought to his fiction the same limpid, closely observed prose that distinguished his reportage.
