Admiral Halsey's Story is the memoir of Fleet Admiral William F. Halsey recounting his extraordinary naval career from his early days through the great carrier battles of the Pacific War. Known to the public as Bull Halsey and to his sailors as a bold and aggressive fighter, he commanded the carrier raids of the war's dark early months, led American forces at Guadalcanal, and as commander of the Third Fleet played a central role in the decisive Battle of Leyte Gulf. It was aboard his flagship, the battleship USS Missouri, that Japan formally surrendered in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. One of only a handful of officers ever to hold the five-star rank of Fleet Admiral, Halsey remains among the most storied commanders in the history of the United States Navy.
