A Reference for Mellors is Anthony Powell’s sly comic squib, written as the reference sought concerning Oliver Mellors, the gamekeeper hero of D. H. Lawrence’s once-banned Lady Chatterley’s Lover, when he applies for a post in the dominions. Powell mischievously imagines the Chatterley household called upon to supply a character for their notorious former servant, a miniature parody that pays affectionate mockery to Lawrence’s Nottinghamshire world of Tevershall. Anthony Powell (1905-2000) was one of the finest English novelists of the twentieth century, celebrated above all for A Dance to the Music of Time, his twelve-volume comic sequence chronicling English society across the middle decades of the century. The story first appeared in the anthology Winter’s Tales in 1966 and was not printed on its own until nearly thirty years later.
