First Edition of A Letter to My Dog; Inscribed by Legendary Singer Tony Bennett to Famous Actress and Singer Doris Day
First edition of this collection of notes and photographs by dozens of celebrity dog lovers. Octavo, original publisher's pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated with color photographs. Association copy, inscribed by legendary singer Tony Bennett to Doris Day on the two page photograph spread of his dog Happy looking out a window at Central Park, "Dear Doris, 'Happy' knows how much we love you, and she'd like to meet you, and so do we. You know we love and miss you - 'Happy,' Susan and 'Tony' Bennett, We miss you. Thanks and yours." The previous page bears a printed 'love letter' from Bennett to his beloved Maltese pooch, Happy. Two of the most influential vocalists of the twentieth century, Tony Bennett and Doris Day shared a longstanding professional admiration rooted in their parallel careers and mutual respect for one another’s artistry. Their friendship was highlighted by Bennett’s appearance as himself on The Doris Day Show in the season three episode “Tony Bennett Is Eating Here,” which aired on November 23, 1970. The episode famously concluded with the pair performing a memorable duet of Bennett’s career-defining song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” a rare on-screen musical moment for Day, who—despite being one of the best-selling recording artists in history—seldom sang on her television series. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Created by Kimi Culp, Lisa Erspamer, and Robin Layton. Jacket design by Bridget White. Photographs by Robin Layton.
Honored with countless awards, including eight Grammys, and with more than ninety albums to his credit (more than forty million sold for the Columbia album alone), not other recording artist has attained Tony Bennett's status. "Tony Bennett is the best singer in the business" (Frank Sinatra). "Tony Bennett has not just bridged the generation gap, he has demolished it" (The New York Times).
