Rare 1767 Philadelphia edition of one of the most influential antislavery works of the eighteenth century, the first appearance to include an extract of the antislavery sermon preached by the Bishop of Gloucester before the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. Octavo, bound marbled wrappers, with a printed paper label to the front wrap. First published in Philadelphia in 1766, Benezet’s work gathered the testimony of numerous travelers and writers to expose the cruelty of the slave trade and the condition of the enslaved in the British colonies, and it was reprinted and distributed on both sides of the Atlantic, exerting a profound influence on the early abolition movement. Anthony Benezet (1713-1784) was a French-born Quaker schoolmaster in Philadelphia and one of the most influential abolitionists of the eighteenth century. A tireless pamphleteer, he established one of the first schools for African American children and corresponded with reformers across the Atlantic. A Caution and Warning to Great-Britain, and Her Colonies, first published in 1766, marshaled the accounts of travelers and earlier writers to expose the brutality of the slave trade and the plight of the enslaved in the British colonies, and it became one of the most widely circulated antislavery texts of its era. It shaped the arguments of later abolitionists including Granville Sharp, Thomas Clarkson, and John Wesley, whose own Thoughts upon Slavery drew directly upon Benezet’s writings.
