A Cat and Mouse Story (1982) is a picture-book retelling of a traditional cat-and-mouse folktale by Michael Rosen. Rosen is an English poet, scriptwriter, broadcaster, and performer who has been writing for children since 1970 and stands as one of the most influential and beloved figures in modern British children's literature. His most celebrated work, We're Going on a Bear Hunt (1989), illustrated by Helen Oxenbury and adapted from a traditional children's chant Rosen had incorporated into his live poetry performances, has sold more than nine million copies worldwide, has never gone out of print, and won the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize in 1989. Author or anthologist of more than two hundred books, Rosen served as Britain's Children's Laureate from 2007 to 2009, holds a PhD in Education and five honorary doctorates, was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, and has taught as Professor of Children's Literature in the Department of Educational Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. Illustrated by William Rushton (1937-1996), the English cartoonist, comedian, and satirist who was a founder of the magazine Private Eye.
